Probably never changed the fluid. This is a Ford 6f50 but see it all the time in 6f35s. Fluid gets cooked and broken down then the fluid pressure just isn’t there.

To be fair, that hose is probably so corroded on there that it doesn’t need the clamp. Removing it will cause chaos

The concerning part of the wad of cash isn’t that its $ 6k, more that its all $20's

ATM, probably. I have a credit union that doesn’t exist in brick-and-mortar locations. Last time I needed to get cash to buy a car, I had to do 5 ATM runs at the $500 daily max.

I think I would very gingerly put a new worm type hose clamp on there ... But even that might be a terrible mistake!

Sparkomatic! That’s a name I haven’t heard in a long time. If you’re going to add an underdash 8-track player you might as well go full 70s!

I was going to say, I once transported $13k in C-notes as payment for something I delivered for a friend. It was an impressive stack, but nothing like that.

I bet there are more than a few Oppo s (most?) who have never heard of Sparkomatic before.
Surprising that there have been functioning cartridges anytime in the last 20+ years. I picked up an old-at-the-time turntable/tuner/8-track player in college (1989ish) for shits ‘n’ giggles, and the vast majority of 8-tracks we tried shit the bed on the first play. That’s not a medium that aged gracefully.

I knew a guy back in the mid 90s that had an 8 track in his Volare. I'd say one in five cartridges he got from the thrift stores worked.

A working Volare in the ‘90s is only marginally less surprising than a 20% success rate for those tapes.
I bought a load of 8-tracks at a record store in Kenmore Square after I bought the old stereo unit. They had a few of the cartridges in the locked display cabinet by the register, without a price. I asked how much they were going for & the clerk said $5. I laughed, but then he said “for ALL of them”. I figured $5 for 20 or so, worth it for the cheese factor, I’ll take them. His response? Great, let me get the rest, went into the store room & brought out 3 milk crates full.
I’ve still got the milk crates. Worth it!

“Working" might be pushing it when describing that Volare. More like "occasionally able to move under its own power".

This checks out.
A buddy of mine had an Aspen sedan in high school. He spent much of his free time keeping it running - and did so rather capably , as the only time it let him down was when he rolled it after hitting some black ice one morning.
He was more pissed about *being late to school that day* than the fact that he’d totaled the Aspen. It ruined what had been a perfect attendance record, up to that point. (The weird thing was that he was neither an especially good student nor enthusiastic about anything school-related, h e just had a goal of never being late or missing a day.)
He yanked the motor the following weekend, and put it into a very rusty Volare that his older brother had left behind when he went off to college.

According to my parents, even when they were new, 8-track tapes broke pretty regularly.

I understand that many don’t like having people in there for liability reasons, but I would think that trust is such a huge issue, at the very least you’d want to have several smart TVs in the lobby so that the mechanic can grab some pictures and then cast them to the TV to explain what’s wrong to curious or untrusting customers.

That sounds about right. I can remember my dad swearing up a storm when the one in his first Wagoneer ate a few tapes shortly after he’d bought them.

Not a bad idea. A poor substitute for being able to be under your vehicle yourself, but much better than what they have today.
